Gluten Freeeeee

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. While whole wheat bread is better for your diet, it still contains gluten. Gluten binds baked goods together and makes them chewy. Gluten can also be in unexpected products such as: chocolates, lunch meats, ice cream, ketchup etc.

What does gluten do to you?

Simply put: “Gluten binds itself to the walls of the small intestine and prevents proper absorption of nutrients from food. Symptoms of Celiac disease include osteoporosis, bloating, anemia, weight loss, fatigue, and depression.“ This bloating and prevention of weight loss will usually target around the areas your body stores the most fat. In most cases this is lower abdominal area for males, for women usually the glutes.

Things to avoid:
  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Semolina and durum (found in pastas)
  • Spelt (does contain less gluten then most flours but still!)
  • Barley
  • Commercialized oats (processed packaged oatmeal)
Safe bet:
  • Rice
  • Potato
  • Oats (gluten free)
  • Quinoa
  • Arrowroot flour/almond flour (ideal for baking)

Eating gluten free is not only a healthier lifestyle choice but can be just as tasteful! Enjoy!
